In 2009, the Government of Canada announced the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program to foster human resource development and foster a new generation of leaders in the Americas while strengthening relationships between post-secondary institutions in Canada and the Americas. These scholarships provide students from post-secondary institutions located in Latin America and the Caribbean with short-term exchange opportunities to pursue studies or conduct research at Canadian post-secondary institutions.
The Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program is a short-term exchange program under Global Affairs Canada's International Scholarship Program.
Eligibility
Eligible students must:
- ✔ be citizens of one of the following countries or territories:
- Caribbean: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Cuba, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands, British Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Montserrat, Dominican Republic, Saint Kitts -and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago
- Central America: Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, El Salvador
- North America: Mexico
- South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela
- ✔ be enrolled full-time in a post-secondary institution in an eligible country or territory
- ✔ pay all required fees at the time of submitting the request and for the entire duration of the exchange
Students are not eligible for this scholarship if they:
- hold or are currently applying for Canadian citizenship or permanent residency
- are already participating in an exchange program funded by the Government of Canada
- are already enrolled in a program of study at a Canadian post-secondary institution leading to a degree, diploma or certificate
In order to welcome students, Canadian post-secondary institutions must:
- ✔ be a Designated Learning Institution (EED)
- ✔ have a valid student exchange agreement with the applicant's home institution. This agreement shall exempt scholarship recipients from tuition fees (only required for college and undergraduate studies)
